Original Martin Lambie Nairn illustrations
Back in summer 2008 Lambie Nairn contacted me with a view to realising the preliminary designs for this years nose in 3D. As the nose itself was to be made in China there were certain limitations placed on the physical dimensions.

2. 3D Visualisation
This was the first time i had worked on a model that was to be made practically. Once the 3D renders were viewed from different angles, it was necessary to dial back the mouth. This had more to do with manufacturing limitations than design choice. There were many iterations of the look for the 3 noses and Sainsburys` were looking to make some 7 million units so they really needed to have a broad appeal.

3. Design change
At one stage in the process there was a radical change in the design suggested. A 2D decal look mapped to the nose. Although this was a strong clean look, i personally liked this more, it seemed that Sainsburys were keen to remain with the full 3D feel.

4. Final Production

Job done and happy smiles all round ! The day was a huge success with an incredible, record breaking, 53 million pounds donated thus far.

Orange_Stars

Job undertaken by :- FREELANCER : GIANCARLO :
Directed by Johnny Hardstaff, produced by RSA London for Fallon.
This ad for Orange begins with a pull back through glass stars and presents in a living room on a continuous journey, out in to the vastness of space through nebulae and a spiral galaxy.
I was required to work on the space scene. It took me around two weeks using primarily Mayas` fluid FX for the Nebulae. The `timelapse style`movement within the clouds was added to bring more dynamism to the shot. The spiral galaxy was created using particle emission from textures, then vortexed. Reality took a back seat when it came to aesthetics as stars are born over millions of years and we can`t actually see a galaxies`motion, but hey ......

Ford Fiesta Sponsored Ad

Job undertaken by:- WeR3D COLLECTIVE :

Work just completed on a Ford Fiesta sponsored ad for ITV2, produced and directed by http://www.smithereen.tv/ .The Fiesta model itself was built by http://www.theory7.com/ . The track was beautiful and the concept was simple but really effective. The piece is a slow climb through the branches of a cherry tree, encountering the struggle of everyday existence experienced by the inhabitants of this small make believe world ,and the larger one around it. The director Jan Urbanowski http://www.jasiurb.com/ and concept artist/designer Jethro Haynes http://jethrohaynes.com/ needed a bunch of freaky CG animals. They wanted to create a `nature documentary` that happens to capture these creatures in action purely by accident. Jethro made practical models of the creatures which always makes it easier to replicate in 3D

The style of animation was crucial. It had to be precise, refined and understated. It was important that nothing was too exagerated or comical as they are simply existing, not performing for the camera. Chris Nunwick our character animator did a great job treading the line. They are creatures of dubious functionality going about their normal, daily business. The colour palette used on the creatures, the primary aim being to replicate natural camouflage, made them quite hard to pick out, particularly with the smaller creatures. We used on location HDR lighting to really bed the animals in to the scene.

Click on the cat for a short taster of the full video _It may take a minute to load. WasGeht is German for `what s`up`. In the UK and the States the show is `myth busters`. The intro was directed and produced by Paul Ayre. We used 3 artists taking 2 weeks to complete. Blastcode was used to destroy the logo. As a plugin for Maya it allows the control necessary over explosive effects on a variety of surfaces. Fortunately all shots apart from 1 were locked off. Unfortunately the client required the logo to appear intact at the end of the piece resulting in a cheesey `flying logo` effect.
