Back in 2006 we were asked to work on a music video for the band Tunng. The track was beautiful and the concept was simple but really effective. The piece is a slow climb through the branches of a cherry tree, encountering the struggle of everyday existence experienced by the inhabitants of this small make believe world ,and the larger one around it. The director Jan Urbanowski http://www.jasiurb.com/ and concept artist/designer Jethro Haynes http://jethrohaynes.com/ needed a bunch of freaky CG animals. They wanted to create a `nature documentary` that happens to capture these creatures in action purely by accident. Jethro made practical models of the creatures which always makes it easier to replicate in 3D

The style of animation was crucial. It had to be precise, refined and understated. It was important that nothing was too exagerated or comical as they are simply existing, not performing for the camera. Chris Nunwick our character animator did a great job treading the line. They are creatures of dubious functionality going about their normal, daily business. The colour palette used on the creatures, the primary aim being to replicate natural camouflage, made them quite hard to pick out, particularly with the smaller creatures. We used on location HDR lighting to really bed the animals in to the scene.
